Étymol. et Hist. 1653 meydan (LA BOULLAYE LE GOUZ, Voyages et observations, p. 97: [à Ispahan] Le Meydan, ou Marché, est la plus grande place qui soit en aucune ville du monde); 1663 meidan (A. DE WICQUEFORT, Relation du voyage de Perse et des Indes orientales trad. de l'angl. de Th. Herbert, p. 52 ds Fonds BARBIER, s.v. banian); 1721 maidan (Trév.). Empr. à l'ar. «place; place du marché; hippodrome, esplanade» (LAMMENS, p. 97 et 153; DOZY t. 2, p. 627b; NASSER, p. 465), mot également passé en turc (meydan), en persan et dans des langues de l'Inde, et comme terme de relation en lat. médiév. maydanum (1314 ds DU CANGE s.v. maidanum), ital. maidan (1471-74 midan ds DEI), port. maidao (1608 ds DALG.), angl. maidan (1625 medon ds NED). Cf. aussi fr. atmayden «hippodrome» (1568, N. DE NICOLAY, Les Quatre premiers livres des Navigations et Peregrinations orientales, p. 65), empr. au turc tmeydan «id.», composé de at «cheval» et de meydan «place».
